The liqueur gets its golden color and name from real saffron threads steeped in milk and grain alcohol, a recipe families in Ancud still guard closely.

Milk, sugar, grain alcohol, saffron, lemon zest, and spices are blended and rested for weeks into a sweet, golden liqueur. It's sold in recycled bottles at Chiloé's markets, mostly around the town of Ancud.

Why it's made this way: Licor de Oro is a Los Lagos specialty almost never found outside Chiloé, made in home kitchens on the island and rarely sold beyond regional markets.
