Vendors hack the top off a coconut right at the stall and hand it to you with a straw — no bottling, no shelf life, just picked that morning.
Hainan's coconut water is sold straight from the shell at beachside stalls and street markets, chilled and served with a straw, often alongside grilled seafood or coconut-based dishes. Wenchang, on the island's east coast, is especially known for its coconut groves and coconut-based street food culture.
Why it's made this way: As China's only fully tropical province, Hainan is the country's coconut heartland, and drinking it straight from the shell is a defining local ritual.
