It's technically not even Croatian in origin, yet locals have fully adopted it as their own national street food.
Burek is a coiled or layered pastry of paper-thin dough wrapped around minced meat, cheese, or spinach, baked until the top turns deep gold. It's sold whole or by the slice at bakeries and kiosks across Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik, wrapped in paper and eaten on the move.
Why it's made this way: It arrived in Croatia via Ottoman-era trade routes and stuck around because it's cheap, filling, and needs no cutlery — exactly what makes a food survive as a daily grab-and-go staple.
