Locals in the nearby town of Samobor take their custard-slice rivalry seriously enough that different bakeries are famous for defending their own exact recipe.

A thick layer of vanilla custard is sandwiched between sheets of flaky puff pastry and dusted with powdered sugar. The version from Samobor, just outside Zagreb, is considered the definitive one and is sold by the slice at the town's historic bakeries and cafés.

Why it's made this way: Samobor's Austro-Hungarian-era café culture produced this specific custard slice, and it's stayed tied to the town even as it spread to bakeries across greater Zagreb.
