Carlsberg's founder buried aging beer in cellars beneath a Copenhagen hill and named the brewery after his son Carl — 'Carlsberg' literally means 'Carl's hill.'
Founded in 1847 in the Valby district of Copenhagen, Carlsberg grew from a single hillside brewery into one of the world's largest beer companies, still headquartered in the city. The old Carlsberg brewery grounds, with their elephant-tower gate, remain a Copenhagen landmark.
Why it's made this way: Few cities can claim to have birthed a beer brand this globally recognized, and Copenhagen wears that history proudly through its old brewery district.
