Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, distilled in Gascony since at least the 15th century — over a hundred years before Cognac existed — yet it stayed a small, farmhouse spirit because most of it never left the region.

Armagnac is an amber grape brandy distilled once, in a single continuous pass through a traditional column still, then aged for years in local black oak barrels. It's drunk neat in small glasses after a meal, with rich notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and toasted wood.

Why it's made this way: It can only be made in Gascony, in the heart of what is now Occitanie, where the sandy soils around Condom and Eauze and centuries of farmhouse distilling built a spirit tradition distinct from anywhere else in France.
