Its loaf shape is meant to evoke a mine shaft entrance — a nod to the silver-mining wealth that built Saxony — and its home market, the Striezelmarkt, has run since 1434, making it one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets.

A dense, yeasted dough loaded with candied citrus peel, raisins soaked in rum, and marzipan is baked into a log, then brushed with butter and buried in powdered sugar. Bakers at Dresden's Striezelmarkt sell it sliced by the piece straight off market stalls through Advent.

Why it's made this way: The market's original name, Striezelmarkt, comes from 'Strüzel,' an old word for the loaf itself, and the annual Stollenfest still parades an oversized version through Dresden's streets.
