The dessert's odd name comes from the way the banana leaf wrapping stains the cooked pudding a faint blue-grey, giving rise to the joking nickname used across eastern Jamaica.
A sweetened cornmeal or sweet potato pudding mixed with coconut, sugar, and spices, wrapped tightly in banana leaf and boiled, then sold untied at roadside stands as a portable sweet snack.
Why it's made this way: The dish is strongly tied to Portland and Jamaica's eastern banana-growing parishes, where banana leaf remains an everyday, low-cost wrapping material for street sweets.
