UNESCO recognised it as intangible cultural heritage, and Brabant still runs an annual competition to crown the province's best worstenbroodje baker.
A seasoned minced-beef sausage is wrapped in a soft white bread dough, not puff pastry, and baked until golden, then sold warm from the bakery counter. It's a fixture of markets and bakeries across Noord-Brabant, eaten as a handheld snack any time of day.
Why it's made this way: It began as a way to preserve meat by baking it inside bread, and it became tied to Christmas and Carnival traditions across the province.
