Two small Nicaraguan towns have feuded for over a century over which of them invented it, complete with rival record-breaking quesillo competitions.

A warm corn tortilla is wrapped around a thick strip of soft, salty string cheese, then topped with pickled onions and sour cream and tied into a small plastic bag — the classic way it's sold roadside.

Why it's made this way: It originated in the early 1900s at train stations in La Paz Centro and Nagarote, where vendors sold it to passengers as a quick, portable snack, cementing its status as a road-trip staple.
