The Douro Valley became one of the world's first legally demarcated wine regions in 1756 — specifically to stop fraudsters from selling fake Port.
Port is a fortified wine made from grapes grown along the steep terraces of the Douro Valley, then aged and shipped from cellars across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. It's sipped as a sweet after-dinner wine, though dry styles exist too.
Why it's made this way: A 1703 trade treaty with England turned Douro wine into one of Portugal's biggest exports, and the region's formal 1756 demarcation made Port one of the earliest wines in the world with legally protected origin status.
