Think of it as Vanuatu's answer to a portable meat pie — grated cassava standing in for pastry.
Tuluk is grated cassava wrapped around a spiced filling of beef or pork, then steamed or baked into a soft, chewy parcel. It's a popular grab-and-go item at Port Vila's Market House and other market food stalls.
Why it's made this way: Cassava is cheap, filling, and easy to grow across Vanuatu's islands, so wrapping it around meat created an inexpensive, portable meal that holds up well without refrigeration.
