This deep, almost black-skinned grape has been grown around Plovdiv since antiquity — its name simply means 'black' in old Greek.
Mavrud is Bulgaria's most celebrated native red grape, grown almost exclusively in the Thracian Lowlands around Plovdiv and towns like Asenovgrad. It produces full-bodied, deeply colored wines with firm tannins and strong aging potential.
Why it's made this way: Mavrud barely grows outside this one warm pocket of Bulgaria, making it the closest thing Plovdiv has to a signature wine grape.
