The earliest known printed recipe, from a 1952 Nanaimo women's club cookbook, simply called it a 'chocolate square' — the city name was only attached later once it spread nationally.
Three layers — a coconut-wafer crumb base, custard-flavored buttercream, and a chocolate ganache top — are set cold and cut into small squares, no oven required. Bakeries and market stalls across BC sell them individually wrapped.
Why it's made this way: The bar is named for and traced directly to the Vancouver Island city of Nanaimo, where it's still the town's signature culinary export.
