Its name literally means 'curd bag' — a nod to the way the pastry dough is folded up and pinched shut around the sweet cheese filling like a little parcel.
A square of yeasted or puff pastry folded around a sweetened curd cheese filling, dusted with powdered sugar, sold from bakery windows and pastry carts across Budapest as a breakfast or mid-morning street snack.
Why it's made this way: It reflects Hungary's deep love of túró (fresh curd cheese) in both sweet and savory cooking, and its handheld, wrapped shape made it a natural fit for grab-and-go bakery counters.
