Sherry's name is a mangled echo of Arabic — it comes from Jerez's Moorish-era name, Sherish, filtered through centuries of English mispronunciation.

Sherry is a fortified wine made from white grapes grown in the 'Sherry Triangle' around Jerez de la Frontera, ranging from bone-dry fino to rich, sweet styles. It's served chilled in small glasses, often alongside tapas.

Why it's made this way: Jerez's chalky albariza soil and Atlantic breezes have supported winemaking for millennia, and in 1933 it became Spain's first officially protected wine region — cementing sherry as Andalucía's signature pour.
