Its base spirit, Batavia arrack, traveled all the way from Java on Swedish East India Company ships — 18th-century sailors mixed it into punsch to make the long voyage home more bearable, and the drink never really left port again.

Swedish Punsch is a golden, sweet liqueur built on Batavia arrack, a coconut-palm spirit from Java, blended with sugar and wine. It's traditionally served warm alongside ärtsoppa, Sweden's classic yellow pea soup, or chilled as a dessert liqueur.

Why it's made this way: Stockholm was the trading and bottling hub for the East India Company's arrack imports, and the city's Thursday tradition of pea soup and punsch — rooted in old fasting customs — cemented the drink as a Stockholm institution.
