Its name is simply a mashup of chorizo and pan (bread) — but that simple combo became the unofficial food of Uruguayan football and Carnival.
Choripán is a grilled chorizo sausage split into crusty bread, topped with chimichurri or the milder mayo-and-mustard blend common in Uruguay. It's sold from smoking grills at street corners, football stadiums, and Carnival crowds.
Why it's made this way: The sandwich descends from the simple, meat-heavy meals gauchos grilled on cattle ranches in the 19th century.
