Salto's orange harvest is large enough that the department is sometimes called Uruguay's 'citrus capital,' and roadside carts squeeze juice from fruit picked that same morning.
Oranges are hand-squeezed to order at roadside carts and market stalls, poured over ice into cups for a quick, cheap refresher. It's most popular during the region's citrus harvest season in winter.
Why it's made this way: The drink is only this cheap and ubiquitous because of Salto's position as Uruguay's leading orange- and grapefruit-growing department.
