Tourists who want to be declared honorary Newfoundlanders must down a shot of Screech and kiss a real cod fish in a pub ceremony called being 'screeched in.'
This strong, dark Jamaican-style rum is bottled specifically for Newfoundland and poured as shots in St. John's pubs, often as part of the tourist 'screech-in' induction ceremony. It traces back to the historic salt-cod-for-rum trade with the Caribbean.
Why it's made this way: Centuries of trading salted cod to Caribbean rum producers left Newfoundland with a rum-drinking culture found nowhere else in Canada in quite this form.
