Campari's signature red color was originally achieved using crushed cochineal insects for dye — a recipe Gruppo Campari only switched away from, to artificial coloring, in the year 2006.
Campari is a bright red, bitter Italian aperitivo made from a secret infusion of herbs, fruit peel, and aromatic plants, invented in Novara but perfected and headquartered in Milan since the 1860s. It's most often served as a Campari soda or an Americano, poured over ice with a slice of orange.
