It's shaped like an upside-down boat because it was originally molded by hand before chocolate could be poured into precise forms, and the shape stuck as tradition.

Gianduiotto is a smooth chocolate praline made from a blend of cocoa and finely ground Piedmont hazelnuts, individually wrapped in gold or silver foil. Turin's chocolate shops and market stalls sell them piece by piece.

Why it's made this way: A 19th-century cocoa shortage pushed Turin chocolatiers to stretch their supply with local hazelnuts, giving rise to the city's signature sweet.
